Vulcan Fanfiction

I've always been partial to those stoical green-blooded aliens and their red world. But I have also become increasingly discontent with their presentation. People--particularly science people--often complain about the bad science of Star Trek but as an historian, it's the bad anthropology which trips me up. Like all too much SF, Star Trek has a tendency to portray cultures as one- or maybe two-dimensional, or to portray alien races as monocultural. As a result, I fear the Vulcans have suffered a certain shallowness. So while I find them "fascinating," I also find them a bit frustrating.

I've endeavored here to present a more complex Vulcan culture, or perhaps cultures. I don't believe I've penned a piece of fanfic which didn't have at least one Vulcan character in it somewhere, but some focus specifically on Vulcans. I've collected them on this page for those readers who, like me, particularly enjoy stories which feature Vulcans and want to cut right to the chase. Be aware that some of these stories also appear elsewhere on this site.

Solon & Helen Wisdom and Beauty

Helen is the daughter of David Brant, an Onodaga archaeologist raised in ShiKahr. Solon is the son of T'Syra and Saval, two of Brant's colleagues. This is their tale: the first human-vulcan pair bonded normally...at age 7. Depends on no series and has no regular cast members. This is "lit'ry mainstream flavored" fanfic. Set in the same era as DS9/Voyager. Not rated, because too many people assume [NC-17] means erotica. This isn't erotica, but does contain disturbing material. Sensitive readers are urged to exercise caution. Underage readers should request a guardian's permission.

a DS9 novel in three parts: Salene & Jake Sisko.

Orfeo

When Bajor hosts an interstellar music festival, a very unusual star singer is invited. But he encounters prurient gossip and prejudice on the station, as well as outright religious opposition from--who else?--Kai Winn. Jake Sisko must face questions about friendship, manhood, and culture, as well as the power of art to change the human (or alien) heart. Rated [G]

Eye of the Storm
Follows events from the series episode "Nor the Battle to the Strong." A month after his experiences at the Battle of Ajilon Prime, Jake is still haunted by nightmares and flashbacks. His father suggests a vacation to see his grandfather on Earth. Meanwhile Salene, worried by Jake's letters, travels to meet him there. Both arrive just ahead of a hurricane! Rated [R] for sexual content

Anslem

Eleven years after his abrupt, late-night departure, Salene reappears in Jake's life. He finds a twenty-nine-year-old Jake whose writing career is beginning to blossom even while his private life is falling apart. Rated [PG-13]

Out of the Past

Voyager rescues a shuttle from an unstable wormhole, only to discover it carries a surprising guest--an old flame of Janeway's. Jealousy arises from an unexpected quarter, setting up a chain of events that results in a peculiar pairing. Rated [PG-13]

T'Kuht Rising

Sequel of sorts to "Out of the Past." As his daughter celebrates her second birthday, Sokar is haunted by doubts and demons from his own childhood. Does he begin instructing her in Vulcan emotional control, or does he grant her the freedom he so coveted as a child himself? Told in first person from Sokar's point of view. Rated [PG-13]

Talking Stick

Set against the backdrop of an informal storytelling circle which arises on Voyager, Chakotay and Tuvok develop a tentative friendship. The result is a surprising revelation from the taciturn Vulcan security officer.
